Superficial caries: what is it

Caries Superficial (Health And Medical Video July 2018).

Surface caries is irreversible defeat of the tooth enamel caused by demineralization of the tooth. Caries requires regular observation and treatment at the dentist.

Symptoms and diagnostics of surface caries

Surface caries is the first stage of tooth disease, in which only the external enamel of the tooth collapses. Without treatment, it will spread deep into the tooth, striking dentin (middle and deep caries).

It is difficult to determine the surface caries independently: at this stage, the sensation of hot and cold food may be insignificant and transitory, and patients usually write down them on the sensitivity of the teeth. If the caries is closer to the neck of the tooth, occasional pain may occur when brushing teeth.

Some people try to see changes in their teeth independently, in front of the mirror, and then suspect caries can only on the outside of the front teeth. Explicit caries can be seen in the form of dark-gray or brown spots.

The only way to accurately recognize and assess superficial caries is a regular review of the oral cavity at the dentist. To assess the depth of damage to the tooth doctor uses a dental probe or method of diagnostic painting of the surface of the tooth preparations - caries detectors.

The initial and superficial caries should be distinguished from other pathologies of the enamel of the teeth - fluorosis, hypoplasia and erosion of the enamel.

Stages of the caries

Dentists distinguish several stages of carious lesions of the tooth:

  • Carious spot (the enamel of the tooth in a certain place changes the color, but visible damage is not present);
  • Surface caries;
  • Middle caries;
  • Deep and complicated caries.

In the stage of stains, caries does not require surgical treatment - it is enough to pay attention to hygiene and fill the deficiency of calcium in the teeth, due to which deficiency and formed carious spots. Prevention at this stage will help prevent the further development of caries.

Demineralization of teeth with carious spots is most effectively carried out by special solutions in the conditions of a dentist's office.

Treatment and prevention of the superficial stage of caries

Many neglect the treatment of surface caries for saving, preferring to wait for an acute toothache and then "cure all together". But the treatment of surface caries is always faster and cheaper, and the launched deep caries can turn out:

  • Dangerous complications (pulpitis, periodontitis);
  • Severe physical suffering;
  • Tooth loss

Therefore, preventive examinations 1-2 times a year - a necessary component of the culture of care for the teeth. The dentist thus has the opportunity to observe the development of carious processes and timely recommend the optimal treatment scheme.

Modern drugs (caries-detectors) allow you to accurately control the degree of damage to the tooth and to put a minimum seal size.

Treatment of all types of caries is carried out in several stages:

  • Toothache anesthesia (at the appointment of a doctor, with an individual selection of drugs);
  • Dying of enamel and removal of caries damaged;
  • Treatment of cavity with medicines;
  • Layer sealing and irradiation with a lamp for light curing;
  • Grinding and polishing.
