Recent studies have shown that the main cause of food dependence is simple carbohydrates. Products with high glycemic index affect the areas of the brain responsible for addiction. This indirectly confirms the theory of the existence of dietary dependence.
According to scientists from the Boston Children's Hospital in Mass., Food with high levels of refined carbohydrates causes a sharp rise in blood glucose levels, and then a sharp drop in it, causing an unmotivated sense of hunger. This process occurs in the body for four hours after consuming food with a high glycemic index (white bread, sugar, honey, potatoes, etc.) - a gap that forms the eating behavior during the next meal.
"We have clearly demonstrated that refined carbohydrates, regardless of the energy value and taste characteristics of food, cause symptoms of dependence in people at risk - are obese or just full," said the head of the study, MD, David Ludwig, Director of the New Balance Prevention Center for Obesity.
The results of the study showed that products with high levels of simple carbohydrates, such as white bread, potatoes and sugar, have a special effect on brain activity, causing addiction.
A rejection of products with a high glycemic index can help in the fight against overweight. Of course, for more evidence, it is necessary to conduct a study covering people of different sex, age and nationality, representatives of different social groups. But it is already clear that the restriction of the use of products with a high glycemic index can reduce food dependency, better control the feeling of hunger and help in the fight against overweight.
