Intestinal flu is a popular name for rotavirus infection. By what signs can you find out that a person has an intestinal flu, and not a poisoning? And how to treat this type of flu?

Intestinal flu is characterized by a clear seasonality. In Ukraine, epidemic outbreaks of intestinal flu are recorded mainly in the spring and summer.

What is an intestinal flu

Intestinal flu, or rotavirus infection, is a severe infectious disease caused by rotavirus and characterized by a combination of symptoms of respiratory and intestinal infections.

Rotaviruses are transmitted from a sick person to a healthy, the main route of transmission is alimentary, that is, through food and dirty hands, but the airborne route of infection is not excluded either.

Due to the immunity to infection, each subsequent disease of the rotavirus infection takes place more easily than the previous one. The youngest children suffer most severely, and the same diseases occur relatively easily and are rare.

Intestinal Flu: Symptoms

The clinical picture of rotavirus infection is quite typical, help in the diagnosis can be clearly seasonal disease and the presence of contact with a sick person.

After a short (1-5 days) incubation period, an acute phase of the disease develops, which manifests itself in a number of symptoms:

  • Vomiting
  • Non-life;
  • Reddening of the throat;
  • Swallowing pain;
  • Increase in body temperature;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Loss of appetite;
  • Headache
  • Dizziness;
  • General weakness.

The chair, which on the second or third day becomes liquid, foam with light gray or light yellow color and a sharp, sour and unpleasant smell, looks characteristic. The frequency of the chair varies from 4 to 5 times a day in adults, up to twenty or more times in children.

Intestinal Flu: Treatment

An effective way to fight rotavirus does not exist yet, so the goal of treatment is symptomatic therapy aimed at combating dehydration, advancing as a result of diarrhea and vomiting.

In the treatment of intestinal flu, it is prescribed:

  • Medical treatment (absorbent preparations);
  • Filling the loss of fluid (electrolytes-containing solutions that fill the loss of fluid and mineral salts, abundant drinking)
  • A clever diet that does not contain acne, fried and spicy products, an irritable bowel (WHO recommends to follow a special diet that includes the following products: bananas, rice, apple puree, crackers, apple without peel, overcooked with banana, milk excluded (in Including breast-feeding).

In typical cases, rotavirus infection is treated in outpatient settings, hospitalization is required when dehydration of the body with the refusal of the child from drinking.
